Today we had the great opportunity to have a chat with dear friend Barbara Marinello, author of the book On Your Knees, talking on biblical references, religion and faith in U2 songs. From the team #U2ieTourItaliaNews our sincere thanks to Barbara!
  •  Why did you choose such a difficult job? Why write a book about U2?
A: One evening a few years ago, it was on December 2012,  I was at a concert of a U2 cover band and while listening to ’40’ I began to wonder: “If this song is the musical rendering of Psalm 40 how many other biblical references can be found in the songs by U2?” and so the idea of the book took shape. At the beginning this was perhaps a joke, almost a pastime, then, going deeper into the research, I realized there was so much to say. I began to consider U2 from another perspective, almost frightened by what I had found and that I had never been able to see before. At the beginning of 2013 the book has become a serious business, something real, and it has become a way to say thank you to those who, with music and songs, were so much part of my life to be not only a shelter but also a guide.
In June 2014, the satisfaction of seeing the Italian version of the book finished and published, followed in September by the English version.
 2. @U2Memes :
  • Could you tell us how you have organized such a laborious and meticulous analysis during the writing process? Which books have you consulted (either U2-related or not)? How difficult is to analize and explain Bono’s lyrics?
A: I must say that the Internet has helped me a lot. I am still part of the generation that has grown on books so for me to research and to compare mean to be surrounded by books and compare them almost page by page, but for my research I have used the Internet, much faster and complete, a lot.
The Internet has helped me to isolate the precise passages of the Bible that might correspond to certain verses of the songs by U2 and the internet has helped me to find and compare interpretations of texts given by the fans.
Of course I have also read some books dealing with the relationship between religion, faith, spirituality and U2 but my main reference has been ‘In the name of Love’ by Andrea Morandi.
You ask me how difficult it is to analyze and interpret the lyrics by Bono. I would say that it is impossible. Bono‘s texts are so rich in meaning and interpretations that it is impossible to make an objective and comprehensive analysis. What I have wanted to consider in a strictly religious sense can for someone else have a political, romantic or erotic value. Even and especially in this is the magic of their songs, we can always recognize all of us in a multitude of different meanings. And Bono is brilliant in this, he is magic in being able to enclose in individual texts and, sometimes, in individual verses the many facets of the human soul and of the universe.

  • Tell us a bit about yourself, your relationship with the Band, for how long have you been a fan, how do you live your passion today, what the 4 lads from Dublin mean to you?

Erano ‘Under a blood red sky’ e ‘The Joshua Tree’.

A: I listened to U2 for the first time when I was nine years old, as my father gave me two tapes he listened to very few times. They wereUnder a blood red skyand ‘The Joshua Tree’. As usually happens at that age I listened to them a bit and then I set them aside. Some years later during the black periods of the  adolescence , perhaps by chance, or perhaps it was fate, I found out those two tapes once again and I began listening to them. Thanks to their music I found the strength to move forward in the darkest moments, and it was then that I began to really get interested in the band, buying all their albums and listening to them with the heart. It was in 2013 that the passion exploded. I was told that I had to undergo a delicate brain surgery to remove a scar and it was then that to finish my book had become a priority, almost an urgency. If the operation went wrong I did not want to leave the book incomplete. At the end the operation went well, only I could not listen to music anymore. Every sound hurted me, I couldn’t stand any noise. Without music it was no longer living. One day by chance I heard on the radio a song that finally I could listen to without any pain. I simply said: “It’s Bono!”. It was ‘Ordinary Love’, it was just out and was already saving me. Since that time U2 have become the only soundtrack of my life, Bono’s voice has become my strength and my peace.

  • In your opinion why a U2 Fan would choose to read your book? Does it have something particular and different than the other booka about U2?

Si legge infatti come 1=primo testamento; 2=secondo libro; 3=terzo capitolo; 14=versetto quattordici, ovvero “And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you”.

A: Compared with other books about the Band I can say that mine is a very technical book and this is as much its strength as its weakness. Being such a technical book makes it different from all the other books, but, admittedly, it can sometimes be difficult and heavy to read. I think I made it interesting with the parallels between the Bible and the songs by U2 and I point to the fact that it can arouse curiosity to find out how much of the Bible there’s actually in their lyrics knowing a priori how much religion has always been important to Bono and the Band. Moreover it is  the religious analysis of their songs made by an atheist.
I like to make an example of my work bringing part of the analysis of ‘Vertigo’: “[Vertigo] is the opening song on the disc, and with the first verses we see how it is related to the closure of the album, in a perfect circle, “unos, dos, tres, catorce” is a biblical reference. It is stated as 1=first testament; 2=second book; 3=third chapter; 14=verse fourteen, that is “And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you”. I AM is no other than God, more precisely the name given to God by God Himself. And after this beginning the album ends with a song called ‘Yahweh’, which is still the name of God. And the circle is closed”.
I am aware that no analysis could ever emphasize enough the strength of the message of faith and deep spirituality that Bono wants to infuse with his lyrics but I hope that my attempt to investigate how much there is of the Bible in the songs by U2 can reinforce the idea that this is not just a rock band but it is something infinitely greater.

5. Daniela @daniDpVox :
  • So..it seems that someone brought the book to Bono at the time of #U2ieTour shows in Turin? Would you confirm this awesome event happened for real?

A:  Well yes. Thanking the immense helpfulness and kindness of Andrea Morandi, as always, I managed to find the right contact at Universal that allowed me to realize this dream. Simply the idea that Bono got my book is an indescribable feeling.

6. Angelo @Noodles105 :
  • Which are your future plans? Are you going to write another book soon (related to U2 or not) considering it has been released also in English? Do you wish for next tour to meet Bono before a show and give him by your hand “On Your Knees” ?

A: At present I do not think I will write another book. Of course I love reading, studying and writing but I never thought about writing again. But you never can tell. All in all I would love doing it.
As for the dream to meet Bono and the Band it is the dream of a lifetime. Having the opportunity to come face to face with Him to say simply “thank you Bono” is really my dream. I hope I can go at least to a concert of the upcoming tour and continue to hope that my dream comes true.
